The situation of the tight New England Patriots is even darker on Tuesday.
The patriots released Veteran veteran Austin Seferian-Jenkins said on the first mandatory minicamp day, according to reports from ESPN's Field Yates and Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.
Seferian-Jenkins plans to spend a month out of football to deal with personal problems and could eventually return to the team afterwards.
Seferian-Jenkins did not participate in Tuesday's minicamp practice or the Team's team activity session on May 23rd. Kevin Duffy of the Boston Herald reported that the 26-year-old had been excused from OTA Week 1 for personal reasons.
That decision leaves the Patriots with five tight ends in their 90-man lineup: Ben Watson, Matt LaCosse, Stephen Anderson, Ryan Izzo and unprepared rookie Andrew Beck. Watson, who returned to New England this spring after a decade in Cleveland, Baltimore and New Orleans, is suspended for the first four games of the 2019 season after failing a PED test.
No matter which of these players will end up breaking the 53-man roster, the New England under-qualified group will be radically different this season. Rob Gronkowski (retired), Dwayne Allen (cut) and Jacob Hollister (traded) are the top three players on the 2018 depth map, who are no longer part of the team.
