If you had to align RHP Tim Elliott's 4th round pick and Levi Stoudt's 3rd round pick choice in a bullpen, you could see a very similar profile. Elliott is a 6,100-pound right-hander who works 90-94 with his heater and gets the best of his breath during a late biting change. It will mix a slider and a curve ball, but both could use the job. The difference lies in the track record and the quality of the competition.
Elliott is a young recruit from the University of Georgia, where he was primarily a reliever until this year. By refining his command, Elliott was one of the SEC's best pitchers and certainly the best midweek starter, averaging 2.93 points and 60/21 K / BB in 61 starts in 13 starts. Elliott works a little more than Stoudt, but the results are impressive, as is his confidence.
"My things are better than theirs and I'm going to do my best," Elliott said. "We did the work and we hardly changed the approach."
Elliott still ranks worse than Stoudt – 244th in Baseball America, getting a 35 FV rating from FanGraphs, and out of the reach of the MLB pipeline. Here is the video of Elliott against Texas A & M recently.
At its best, Elliott has been super efficient in launching a Maddux SO against Florida Atlantic this year, but the low-90 bike, size and short track in the rotation are definitely question marks that push him to 4/5 expected entries.
It's now FIVE straight university pitchers for the Mariners. There are things to love about every choice, especially Kirby and Campbell, and the refreshed depth of pitching in the system is absolutely gorgeous. It must be said that this is a surprising race in a project that is not considered as rich in depth of academic pitching.
