Universal Content Productions is in development for the sequel to the 1980s sitcom that featured Sun Moon Frye as a girl in foster care.
Frye is eager to resume her role for the series if she were to return to television.
She should also produce with the creator of the series, David Ducion. The series would be written by Steve and Jim Armogida ("School of Rock").
"Punky Brewster" was originally aired on NBC from 1984 to 1986, but no network is currently attached to the project.
George Gaynes, who played the role of adoptive parent of Punky, died in 2016.
According to UCP, who confirmed the news to CNN, the new series would focus on an adult Punky, become a single mother of three children and meet a girl who remembers it to herself.
If the series came in series, the series would join a resuscitated family sitcom club, such as "Boy Meets World", "Full House" and "Roseanne".
