Mayor Mark Chambers called for the assassination of LGBT people

The mayor of a city in Alabama reportedly called for "killing" of homosexuals in a Facebook comment since deleted.

Mark Chambers has grouped "homosexuals" and "transvestites" with "baby killers" and "socialists", according to the WBRC television channel.

The Mayor of Carbon Hill is reported to have said that his remarks were taken out of context before apologizing.

A gay rights group demanded his resignation. The mayor could not be reached immediately for a comment.

According to the WBRC, Chambers posted on Facebook a graphic that reads all in capital letters: "We live in a society where homosexuals read us about morality, transvestites read us about human biology, killer babies read us on Human rights and socialists are reading about economics! "

The mayor would have commented on the following article: "The only way to change it would be to eliminate the problem.I know it's bad to say, but without [sic] to kill them, there is no way to fix it. "

The comment prompted the mayor to step down, including the Alabama branch of the human rights campaign.

The group called Mr. Chambers' remarks "horrifying, unacceptable and unacceptable".

"LGBTQ people face disproportionate levels of violence and harassment in their daily lives – a fact that is particularly true in Alabama – Mayor Chambers must be accountable."

Mr. Chambers did not announce that he would withdraw from the Town Hall of Carbon Hill, a town of less than 2,000 inhabitants located 240 km north of the capital, Montgomery.

When the WBRC contacted Mr. Chambers, he initially denied writing this comment, according to the Birmingham-based news channel in Alabama.

But during a subsequent appeal, he reportedly told the WBRC that he had made the comment public by mistake and intended to send it privately to a friend.

During his phone call with the television channel, Mr. Chambers also reportedly referred to immigrants in the United States, calling them "ungrateful" and claiming that they were seizing the country.

US media reports that Mr. Chambers apologized on his Facebook page by writing, "Although my comment was taken out of context and was not aimed at the LGBTQ community, I knew that it was wrong to say that whoever should be killed [sic]. "

Mr. Chambers has been Mayor of Carbon Hill since 2014.

According to the city's website, he ran in the elections because Carbon Hill "was not going in the right direction."
