After a month 's search for coaching, the Los Angeles Lakers eventually hired former Indiana Pacers and Orlando Magic coach Frank Vogel.
If Vogel was not the first choice of the team, he was open to choosing his coaching staff. And in all the contradictory reports, the only constant was that the Lakers were adding former Milwaukee Bucks head coach, Jason Kidd.
While Kidd should become Vogel's senior assistant coach, the Lakers are slowly adding to their numbers before the NBA 2019 draft on June 20th.
Although former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins was a candidate, he will now join Vogel staff as an assistant coach for the 2019-20 NBA season, according to Adrian Wojnarowski. ESPN:
The Los Angeles Lakers hire Lionel Hollins as an assistant coach, ESPN sources told the league. The Lakers have made it a priority to add coaching experience to new coach Frank Vogel, who now has Hollins and Jason Kidd.
In the three seasons of former head coach Luke Walton, his inexperienced coaching staff has been criticized. With three former senior coaches, the problem has been solved and it will be interesting to see if they are able to work together.
Before the Lakers hired Hollins, Vogel was not personally worried about Kidd replacing him instead of the team's head coach. Instead, he was more concerned about adding good assistant coaches to his staff.
As Kidd's past is well documented, Hollins has already trained the Grizzlies and Brooklyn Nets. In Hollins' nine seasons, he was 262-272 and led the Grizzlies to the 2013 Western Conference Finals.
Because Hollins has not coached since the 2015-16 season, it's probably an opportunity for him to show future teams how he sees the game now. Hollins is about to join the Lakers and they are training a solid coaching staff.
While the Lakers are trying to put all the drama behind them, hope is that the former president of basketball operations, Magic Johnson's comments have not affected their ability to improve alignment. As Vogel will adopt an analysis-based approach, he would have the respect of LeBron James.
