TORONTO – Watching the Yankees on Tuesday night against the terrible Blue Jays, they seemed tired despite their Monday break.
The bats seemed slow and were not productive in the clutch. DJ LeMahieu committed a rare basic mistake that killed a chance to score. And the second consecutive outing of Masahiro Tanaka below average hurt the visitors.
Tanaka allowed four points in the fifth inning when the Blue Jays cleared a two-point deficit, while Randal Gruchuk and Freddy Galvis managed to get the hosts to a 4-3 win in front of 20,671 at Rogers Center.
The second consecutive loss of the Yankees brought their record to 38-21 and for the first time since April 30 – May 1, they lost twice in a row.
Aaron Hicks and Clint Frazier dominated for the Yankees.
Tanaka (3-5) absorbed a second consecutive loss. In six innings, Tanaka allowed four runs and six hits. He walked twice, hit a hitter and tuned those two circuits. In his last four starts, Tanaka has had two defeats and a pair of non-decisions. The last time Tanaka won on May 12, he beat the Rays 7-1 and scored seven innings. He has a win in the last eight starts. Meanwhile, Tanaka is 1-4 with an ERA of 3.83.
It was Tanaka's first game against the Blue Jays this season and he broke records of 11-4 and 2.69 in the 17th of his career.
The Hicks leader in the eighth reduced the Blue Jays' lead to 4-3 and was his second of the season.
A rare LeMahieu error helped loose a scoring chance on seventh after opening the round with a center double. Luke sees Radiant took a bit of the threat. Gary Sanchez followed with a hard floor until the short stop Galvis, who saw LeMahieu get lost too far from the second. Eric Sogard was sent to the second baseman. He tagged LeMahieu and shot the first goal to get the heavy legged Sanchez for the double play.
The Yankees took the lead 4-2, while Gleyber Torres and Frazier scored two goals against Thomas Pannone to start the inning, but Daniel Hudson came out of the Blue Jays' bow to eliminate the threat.
He retired from Gio Urshela on a routine flight to the left, barred Cameron Maybin and blocked two when Brett Gardner flew to Grichuk in the center.
A single from Sogard and a ballad in an outing for Justin Smoak put Tanaka in a deadlock in the first inning which he got rid of by giving Rowdy Tellez a ball on the ground that started a double 1-6-3. to play.
This double murder started a series of 10 consecutive Blue Jays removed by Tanaka. This stretch of domination came to an end when Grichuk sent a 1-1 shot over the left field wall leading to fifth place. The 10th Grichuk circuit reduced the Yankees' lead to 2-1 and was followed by a march to Cavan Biggio, son of the Craig Biggio Hall of Fame.
With one on Biggio passed second. He had been originally called by the second base referee, Carlos Torres, but a review canceled the call. Galvis put the Blue Jays ahead, 3-2, with a towering volley of goals in the center right, his ninth of the season.
Sogard scored twice in the right corner, leaving the sleeve alive. Sogard, single on the ground, scored 4-2 for Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
After eight minutes before the game to tackle many issues, including his problems in the league Sunday night and regret not having spoken to the media after a brutal performance, Frazier gave a lead of 2-0 to the Yankees in the fourth inning with his 11th homer.
Hicks started the heat with a center-left double, Clayton Richard, and scored in front of Frazier, who hit a fast 94-mph shot on the left-court wall.
Frazier started the game with a slip of 18 against 79 (.228) in 23 games (22 starts) since May 6 and had the gas in the first heat.
