MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – If you can play safely and you're on the West Virginia campus, chances are you'll have a chance to get to the field in 2019.
Sophomore EJ Brown became the third player to occupy this position to access the NCAA transfer portal within two days, joining Kenny Robinson, a very promising presenter, in safety, and Derrek Pitts, starting in free mode. The news was reported for the first time by 247 sports.
Robinson entered the portal on Tuesday, apparently because of a case of academic misconduct outlined in the university's code of conduct. Pitts and Brown entered the portal separately the next day.
Brown's departure should not have the same impact as the losses of Robinson and Pitts, although he could take advantage of their absence. Brown Redshirted in 2017, then played in 11 games as a special player last season. He registered a tackle.
Brown is a native of Stone Mountain, Georgia, weighing 5 feet 10 inches and weighing 204 pounds.
Both Brown and Pitts practiced safely in the spring. Jake Long was the # 2 player at this position and would currently be the default player at the top of the depth map if no one else was moved.
Fortunately for climbers, safety was a highly recruited position in the upcoming class.
New players Osita Smith (Wilde Lake, Md.) And Tykee Smith (Philadelphia) are the two top ranked players the Mountaineers have recruited. Rashean Lynn – the first high school player to sign with West Virginia after hiring Neal Brown – will also be there. Kerry Martin, a native of Charleston, also has a head start on her play time after registering early and taking part in the spring practice. Martin worked on free security behind Robinson.
