In our last video, we worked with macOS Catalina to explore all the new features that will arrive on Mac later this year.
One of the most notable changes at Catalina is the removal of the iTunes application, which is a key feature of Mac since 2001. In Catalina, iTunes has been replaced by three applications: Music, Podcasts, and Television ( coming later in the year). .
New apps can do everything iTunes can do to keep Mac users from losing functionality. For device management, the Finder application is now used. When you connect an iPhone or iPad, this is displayed in the Finder, with all the same management and synchronization features available.
TV, Podcasts and Music apps look like iTunes and have similar features, which should make the transition easier for most Mac users. On Macs with a 4K screen, such as iMac, the new TV application supports 4K HDR playback for the first time, as well as Dolby Atmos sound.
macOS Catalina presents a new useful Sidecar feature, designed to transform the iPad in a secondary display for the Mac. It can work as a traditional second display or with a mirroring feature. Apple Pencil support works with Sidecar, so you can activate your iPad in a drawing tablet using applications like Photoshop.
For those whose Apple Watch is set to unlock the Mac, there is now an option to approve security prompts in Catalina by pressing the side button on the watch. Macs with a T2 chip also support Activation Lock, making them unusable for thieves just like on the iPhone.
There is a new Find My application that allows you to track your lost devices. Previously, this feature was only available via iCloud on Mac. There is even a new option to search your devices even offline by leveraging Bluetooth connections with other nearby devices, which is especially convenient on the Mac because it does not have a cellular connection.
Apple extends the Screen Time application to the Catalina Mac, allowing Apple users to track the use of their devices on Mac, iOS and iPad for a better overall picture of the time spent using the electronics.
For developers, a "Project Catalyst" feature allows applications designed for the iPad to be transferred to the Mac in a few clicks in Xcode and some minor changes. The ultimate goal of Apple with Project Catalyst is to offer more applications on the Mac.
Photos has an updated interface that better highlights your best photos, Safari includes a new start page with Siri Suggestions, Mail offers a new email blocking feature, and a new option for mute threads. The Reminders application has been revamped and is now more useful. .
Especially macOS Catalina Removes support for 32-bit applications, so some of your older applications will stop working. The operating system will tell you which applications are obsolete after upgrading.
macOS Catalina is available for developers, but it should not be installed on a main machine and this time because it is not particularly stable and has some bugs. Apple plans to make a beta version of Catalina available to public beta testers in July and after a few months of testing to eliminate bugs and fine-tune features, macOS Catalina will be launched in the fall.
