A helicopter rescuing a 75-year-old woman from an alarm basket took a dramatic turn when it went out of control on Tuesday. The vertiginous rescue of the injured hiker was filmed.
A spokesman for the Phoenix Fire Department said the woman had been flown from Piestewa Peak after being injured during a hike. While she was being transported, the basket began to spin wildly. Paul Apolinar, chief pilot of the Phoenix Police Air Support, said that a line used to prevent the rotation was not working properly.
"We were doing a rescue, a winch rescue, we did a lot, it was a normal rescue," he said. "Sometimes, when we lift the helicopter off the ground, it starts spinning, so we have a line attached to the basket to help prevent this, and today it was not."
Fire captain Kenny Overton told The Arizona Republic that the woman was torn in the face, injured her wrist and hip, and could have a broken nose during her ascent. However, it has not suffered any adverse effects of the spin.
The woman was then taken to a trauma center in the area for assessment.
None of the firefighters involved in the rescue was injured.
