Apple's latest operating system for Mac, macOS Catalina, is not only exciting for current Mac computer owners – it might contain big clues for the next big one Macbook Pro.
That's the rumor MacBook Pro with a 16-inch screen, not the first MacBook Pro with an 8-core processor which has just been published in May 2019. All eyes are on redesign, not on refreshment.
Mac OS 10.15 Catalina presents some major features that give us a clear idea of what to expect (read: hope) of the next MacBook Pro. MacOS Catalina offers three main themes that could – and should – be improved with the next MacBook Pro.
A much better MacBook Pro for the game
Although nothing was said explicitly by Apple about macOS, Catalina reminded us of the upcoming MacBook Pro gaming laptopit's the combination of Project Catalyst and Apple's deepening relationship with the AMD graphics processor (GPU) manufacturer that meets our expectations.
First, Project Catalyst will see a flurry of iPad apps coming on macOS in the coming year, and the most popular apps on iPad by far are the games – as is the case on the iPhone. Apple has finally recognized the position of its mobile devices as a gaming platform via Apple Arcadeand even the name of Asphalt 9: Legends in his preview of Project Catalyst: this influx of games for iPad on Mac will surely have an effect on the perception of game chops MacBook Pro.
Also examine the evolution of the relationship between Apple and AMD in recent years. In fact, AMD's next AMD graphics card debuted at the WWDC 2019 keynote, which shows Apple's interest and confidence in the company. Macs and high-end MacBook Pro only offer AMD graphics options, and that will only continue. So, could we see the MacBook Pro better serve all fans and Mac players? Here is to hope.
Siri's big break for professional life
Apple's voice assistant, Siri, has been available on the Mac for a long time – at least several versions of MacOS. And frankly, it did not do much to help people do their job.
This could very well change with the upcoming MacBook Pro, as Siri's voice control capabilities have improved considerably with macOS Catalina. Users can now browse the entire operating system only with their voice.
This is currently considered an accessibility feature, which is certainly welcome, but we see much more potential there, especially given the improvements in natural language in Siri with the iOS 13 update. If the next MacBook Pro was able to perform complete tasks for us using only Siri, that would change the game for typists at the limit of time.
A MacBook Pro with close friends
With macOS Catalina, the iPad becomes a trusted companion to the Mac with the Sidecar function, which is aptly named. This allows the iPad to become not only a secondary display for the Mac, but also allow Apple Pencil to enter macOS via a list of supported applications.
This seems to be a clear indication of how much Apple is considering taking its next MacBook Pro – and all of its Macs in general, really. It is easy to anticipate this type of functionality by expanding access to the system in the next version of macOS, with the Pencil entry extending beyond the few applications it now supports.
Similarly, we could easily see the iPhone benefit from similar access to macOS via Sidecar, for example as a smaller secondary screen or as an additional input method. Using this feature, the iPhone could even become a macOS game controller for different iPad games destined for macOS ports in the coming years. Whatever it is, we expect that Apple will double its MacBook Pro as a hub for its mobile devices, taking full advantage of their touch features.
