An explosion of fireworks injured 12 firefighters, including 2 seriously, in New Mexico

A major explosion at a fireworks depot in New Mexico injured 12 firefighters on Wednesday as they prepared for the July 4th celebration.

Members of the Roswell Fire Department, New Mexico, were preparing fireworks for the show around 12:15 pm. According to the New Mexico State Police, the local time when a Some type of accident occurred and some of the fireworks from the Roswell Industrial Air Center exploded.

According to the authorities, two firefighters were injured in the blast and had to be flown to a local hospital. Ten others were treated on site for minor injuries.

"All we know now is that there were 12 firefighters inside the building at the time of the explosion," said at a conference Captain Lance Bateman, of the New Mexico State Police.

Bateman said that an investigation is underway on the causes of the blast.

"For now, we will not answer on what caused it," he said. "We want to know with certainty, we do not think there was malevolence, it just seems accidental."

The explosion did not cause any injuries among the civilians. An airport runway was closed for a while to accommodate firefighters and police personnel.

It took about 20 minutes to put out the fire, the police said. The eyewitness video showed a huge cloud of white smoke over the airfield.

The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are participating in the investigation.
