Google Maps already lets you bypass traffic and road closures, but it can also help you avoid areas affected by natural disasters.
Today's update includes:
- Hurricane forecasts that will appear if you are near an area likely to be affected by a hurricane
- The shakemap of an earthquake, if an earthquake has just hit your area
- Flood forecast in India, where Google points out 20% of flood-related deaths worldwide
From the map that displays this information, you can also send your location to friends and family or share information about the crisis so that other users know which areas to avoid.
Later this summer, Google Maps will add features similar to navigation, allowing you to avoid routes and areas of your route that may be affected by a natural disaster.
