NJ Transit's River Line service was "very limited" Friday after the agency announced that it would begin "emergency mechanical inspections and repairs" to a fleet of light rail trains. , said a spokeswoman for the agency.
The River Line connects Trenton to Camden through communities along the Delaware River.
Some wheels of a light rail vehicle "have not met the required safety standards" during a scheduled safety inspection.
The cars are starting to pass the inspection and are being put back into service, spokeswoman Nancy Snyder said.
However, the service "does not compare to the service we usually provide," she said.
NJ Transit strives to restore regular service as soon as possible and safely, Snyder said. It is not known when the line will be completely restored.
The temporary suspension was announced Thursday.
"A preliminary inspection indicates that there was a defect in a single batch of wheels delivered by the original manufacturer," NJ Transit said in a statement. "As a precaution, a complete inspection is underway on every wheel of every vehicle, a process that requires a lot of work."
NJ Transit did not specify when it hoped that the inspection and repairs would be complete
"Customers will be accommodated by a special express bus service between the four busiest stations, as well as the existing local bus service operating along the River Line route," said NJ Transit.
The four busiest stations – Trenton Transit Center, Florence, Beverly / Edgewater Park and Camden's Walter Rand Transportation Center – serve more than half of the River Line's daily ridership. Most other stations will be served by the existing local bus service, the agency said
Guests at Burlington South, Delanco, Cooper Street and the Entertainment Center (BB & T Pavilion in Camden) are encouraged to use other stations, no local bus lines serving these stations, indicated the 39; agency.
