On Monday, Target announced that it would increase childcare benefits and increase paid family leave to 350,000 euros.–full-time hourly and hourly employees in stores, distribution centers and headquarters.
"We have taken a firm stance on the starting minimum wage, but that's just one aspect," said Melissa Kremer, Target's director of human resources, in her prepared remarks.
Beginning this fall, targeted workers will receive 20 days of child and elder care through a network of partners.
Employees will be able to take their child to a network daycare for $ 20 per day or pay a subsidized hourly rate for home care.
Target will also change to offer its employees two weeks of paid parental leave as part of a broader policy that gives employees up to four weeks of paid vacation per year to care for a newborn or sick family member . New moms at the target also get an extra six to eight weeks of paid maternity leave.
"We recognize that there are many different situations" when employees need to take time to care for their family members, said a company spokesman.
Target's new milestones follow Walmart's last week extend its educational benefits to high school students.
Walmart also proposed more stable work schedules for workers and expanded the number of paid vacations and training, which reduced the turnover rate to five years.
Walmart offers up to six weeks of paid parental leave for full-time hourly workers and an additional 10 weeks of paid maternity leave for new mothers.
