It's not a party like a Gilead party, because a Gilead party does not stop … until Aunt Lydia becomes a psychopath on a maid on the living room rug.
A baptism in the week the Tale of the maid going really bad, thanks to the extreme flip-out of the aforementioned aunt. It's a horrible scene that we'll talk about more in a moment – just say that Ann Dowd remains one of the great lights of this show – but you'll have to forgive me if I'm still not reconstituted after witnessing Emily's heartbreaking reunion with his wife and son.
After so many tragedies, watching an extremely fragile conversation with one's partner and child reaffirms my confidence in the resilience of the human heart. But do not get me wrong: the meeting is not the end of the Hallmark movie as we would have hoped. After Gilead and the settlements, how could that be?
Oh, and then something is really wrong with June, Luke and Little Nichole. Read on for the highlights of "God bless the child."
I THANK THE LORD | The bells ring as everyone comes together to celebrate all newly born babies in the district. "It takes a village," June commented as she and her roommates filed files with armed guards, "and machine guns." As the church approaches, she surreptitiously looks at everyone, wondering who could be turned into an ally to help her. this place on the ground. Aunt Lydia gets on board an invalid scooter, reminding her daughters to behave well. "Hell on wheels," jokes Alma.
Inside, the maids who gave birth have a place of choice. June's new partner, Ofmatthew, apparently pious, is beside her. We learn that she had three babies, one of whom is raised to the altar when the new parents of the district (the commanders and their wives) show their children. June softens a little by noticing that Ofmatthew is looking a little with dark skin. She tells Ofmatthew that her son is cute, but she gets a mild platitude in return, so she stops trying. Also note: Putnam are up there with little Angela.
Commander Waterford is in the audience, but Serena is not there. In June, Hannah received a flashback on the baptism, a private and awesome affair that was attended by Luke, the godmother Moira and Grandma Holly. Then she considers Waterford telling us that she should feel hatred for him, but his emotions are more complicated. But she is certain: "This is not love." To the commander of the congregation, the commander who directs the debates evokes Nichole, who would have been taken "by an unrepentant sinner". He asks the seated people to pray for his safety. "Amen," June said aloud.
DAY HOUR | Then the Putnams invite Aunt Lydia and the maids to their home for a reception. Janine is so excited to see the baby, and although Naomi Putnam does not make the maid's level of joy, she thanks June for what she did on deck in Season 1 and even throws a 'blessed' iced like Janine's. Then Lydia and the ladies in red are taken to a back room where they will end up in their separate and uneven adventure until it is time to go home.
When Serena arrives, June and she chat quickly in the hallway. Serena says she did not want to be a "distraction" at the dedication. June takes advantage of these few moments to give a speech of encouragement to her former mistress, reminding her that half of the women who had supported her plan to teach Gilead's daughters to read had not abandoned when things went wrong and the patriarchy was not. will break. Serena wonders if June regrets not having fled when she has had the opportunity. "Not without Hannah," says June, adding that from the inside, she still hopes to see her daughter again. When Fred approaches, June takes off and Serena says she is there to support Naomi – not to be with him.

She sits wearily and Janine brings her something hot to drink. Janine expresses only love for the elderly woman, claiming that she prays for her to improve after Emily's attack. "I know what the girls think of me," said Lydia, noting that she was being hated from all sides: the commanders blame her for fleeing Emily. "I should never have saved her from the colonies," Lydia grimaces. But Janine says she is happy to have saved her. "Me too," said Aunt Lydia, all kind and loving. I know I've said it before, but between this scene and what will happen later, Ann Dowd is a scary national treasure.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Fred spends a moment alone with June to tell him he's worried about Serena. It's time to "hear," he says, but June wonders, "Is that what your wife wants?" He admits it's hard to know, but he's pretty sure Serena is not satisfied "planting flowers and knitting sweaters." So, June plants the seed of her gift to Mrs. Waterford "A real voice, backstage, of course." To my surprise, he is open to that, if it "settles things" between them.
Naturally, June went to the indoor pool of Putnams, where Serena smoked on a deck chair. "The commander wants to be reconciled," she said, adding that she had suggested Serena to have more freedom in her marriage. "Wear the dress, pull the strings," advises June. Serena silently hands her the cigarette case and lighter, and the maid takes advantage of it. They then sit down, smoking in a familiar silence.
AUNT LYDIA SNAPS | When little Angela wakes up, Naomi leads her into the living room so guests can wow and oh. Janine breaks protocol a lot when she approaches Putnam and asks to hold her daughter in her arms. Aunt Lydia bursts even her billy club, but Naomi allows it. The little girl is crying all the time, but that seems to be best when Janine voluntarily gives the baby back to her former mistress. But then, that remaining eye becomes even crazier than usual and soon, Janine emphatically suggests that she could get into the house and give Angela a brother or sister. "I just want to be with my daughter!" Cries Janine, whom Aunt Lydia apparently regards as a bridge too far (too soon?). Thus, the older woman strikes the maid and continues to beat her. Anger annoys him so much that she unleashes June when she tries to intervene. So June screams for someone else to stop her, but none of the commanders nor their wives are raising a finger heavier than you to make it happen. June puts her whole body between Lydia's anger and Lydia and yells "STOP IT NO" as if she were disciplining a dog that was chewing a slacker until Lydia came to her senses and stopped.
Janine is kidnapped by guards. Lydia looks around her, perplexed. "My sincerest apologies," she mumbles before straying into an empty room and sobbing.
FAMILY MEETING | In Canada, Emily and his wife Sylvia see each other for the first time in years outside a metro station. They hug and Emily seems to be hurting. I mean, she probably is. Back at Sylvia's house, the couple is uncomfortable with what they recognize, but that does not make the situation any less strange. Their son, Oliver, has not come home yet. Emily asks if he remembers her, and it's such a terrible thought that he might not do it, she can barely ask the question.
But when Sylvia shows her room, she is covered with photos of her and their family. One of her framed drawings depicts her as a superhero "struggling to get home," Sylvia says softly. Before Emily can have complete relief, Oliver returns home and climbs to the floor. Emily is so happy to see him and that makes things lighter. "He is so big!" She amazes Sylvia. (Side note: This scene near DID ME IN.)
At bedtime, Oliver asks Emily to read him a bedtime story. Meanwhile, she and Sylvia start crying so loud that the impatient kid decides to read the book himself. After falling asleep, Emily joins Sylvia for a beer and a tense conversation on the porch.
Elsewhere in the Great White North, Luke and Moira arrange for Nichole to be baptized – though the previous flashback showed that June was the main driver of Hannah's ceremony. "This little one should be absolved of his sins," says Luke.
CONSULT LUKE! | As June waits to leave the Putnam's house, Serena approaches to explain how she can see Hannah playing outside after lunch in her school. And that seems like a huge win, right? Too bad, a few minutes later, a guardian enters and wants to see Commander Waterford immediately: he has a video of a Canadian demonstration showing his solidarity with Chicago, who, you will remember, is rebelling against Gilead. Luke is at the demonstration and he is wearing Nichole in a baby carrier. The Waterfords force June to confirm Luke's identity, which she reluctantly does. And while Serena marvels at Nichole's size – why do I feel that Mrs. Waterford's alliance has suddenly gone from hesitant to nonexistent? – June comes out of the room, sits down and has a whole lot of emotions (joy to see her daughter safe, afraid of what it means for Luke), all at once.
