Nintendo is actively studying 5G technology

Will Nintendo use 5G?

Shareholders like buzzwords, is not it? With regard to the buzzwords of telecommunications, nothing is more spicy that & # 39; 5G & # 39; at the moment. The telecommunications industry is dreaming about how 5G is going to change our lives and is desperate to sell new subscriptions and handsets. But what does it mean on the front of the game?

Nintendo was asked how it planned to respond to the change in communication standards – from 4G to 5G – at its recent Shareholder Forum. Ko Shiota provided the answer below – explaining how society is not just chasing trends, but also considering how to apply the latest technologies to gameplay:

The 5G can send a large amount of data without latency. We are aware that this technology is receiving a lot of attention, and Nintendo is also studying the issue. However, we are not just chasing technology trends. When we look at what we offer in our entertainment and services, we think about how technology will be applied to gaming and the new experiences and gameplay we can offer consumers through this app. Cost is also an extremely important factor in 5G. It is difficult to use an exceptional technology even if the cost is too high. We will continue to study in depth the cost of new technologies.

Of course, this is the kind of speech that shareholders want to hear. The most logical implementation of the 5G for Nintendo at this stage would be a new switch SKU with 5G data capabilities.

It's no secret to anyone. Nintendo is already experimenting with "cloud version" games for Switch in Japan. However, this technology is currently limited to people with a quality WiFi connection. If this habit were to become popular, a 5G compatible switch would make a lot of sense.

Company President Shuntaro Furukawa himself discussed the cloud and streaming technology, noting that Nintendo hoped that these technologies would be increasingly used in the future to bring games to consumers:

Although we do not expect all games to become cloud games anytime soon, the technologies are definitely moving forward. We envision a future where cloud and streaming technologies will increasingly develop as a means of delivering games to consumers. We must follow such changes in the environment. That being said, if these changes increase the global player population, it will give us more opportunities, thanks to our integrated hardware and software development approach, which will reach the world with the unique entertainment that Nintendo can provide.

It seems that Nintendo is rather interested in 5G, provided that the demand is there and that the price is effective. The latter has a simple solution: make it optional. Apple has already shown that offering the optional 4G on their iPad was a way to satisfy the demand of those who wanted it. Could this approach be something that we will see apply to the switch in the future?

What do you do with these Nintendo statements? Would you be interested in a compatible 5G switch if it was finally available? How much money would you like to spend? Share your thoughts below.
