PHOENIX – A barista reportedly asked six Tempe police officers to leave a Starbucks after a customer felt uncomfortably facing their presence.
The July 4th incident occurred at Starbucks off the Scottsdale and McKellips roads.
According to a statement released by the Tempe Officers Association, six officers were drinking their coffee when a barista approached the group to ask them to step out of the customer's line of sight or leave the facility.
The barista reportedly stated that the client "did not feel safe" because of the presence of the police.
Officers left shortly after.
"This treatment of public security officers could not be more discouraging," the statement said. "Although the barista is polite, making such a request was shocking. Unfortunately, such treatment has become too common in 2019.
"We know this is not a national policy at Starbucks Corporate and we look forward to working with them in this important dialogue."
Below the statement of the TOA in its entirety.
On independence day, six Tempe policemen stopped by Starbucks at Scottsdale Road and McKellips for coffee. The officers paid for their drinks and got up together to have coffee before their long shift on July 4th.
They were approached by a barista, who knew one of the police officers by name, because he is a regular at this place. The barista said that a client "did not feel safe" because of the presence of the police. The barista asked the agents to come out of the customer's line of sight or leave.
Disappointed, the officers have actually left.
