Texas Rangers in Minnesota Twins
More / Less: 10
First step: 11:10 PT
Probable throwers: Jesse Chavez (3-3, 2.97) vs. Michael Pineda (5-4, 4.78)
Initially in my GT column covering this highly publicized series on Wednesday, I was tilted up. But after looking in detail at this confrontation – and considering where the total is, "I think at least one of the two probabilities can get away with an outstanding performance and lead at a slow pace.
The rise of Chavez is very real. The 12-year-old, who is in the first season of his second term with the Rangers, has been booming since he was reinstated in a starting rotation after serving mainly as a relief for a few years.
Overall, Chavez has solid statistics, but as a starter he has been even better. In six starts, he had a brilliant half-time of 1.42 and 0.68 WHIP, not even hitting a single batter on his 19 innings as a starter.
Some of these consisted of Chavez serving as an opener, but the leash was loosened considerably, as he was allowed to sink deeper into the games. In fact, Chavez has recorded six effective heats in each of his last two outings. This is a veteran who has already launched well in the lightning as a starter and, therefore, it is perhaps not a coincidence. It just looks like he's in control.
Yes, Chavez will face a powerful Twins offense that literally breaks the record of most home runs in history before the All-Star break.
However, he will get less complete training. The CrJ Cron has just arrived on the injured list, and since this is a day game after a night game, there may be more than one of the club's regulars.
Pineda, one of my best sleepers who starts in the season, will meet expectations from the mound, and although he has not yet met expectations, he still seems to be close.
This certainly seems to be the case, given his previous debut, since the 30-year-old has produced just one run in three of his last four outings. His most recent trio was his most impressive, when he tied his season record with eight strikeouts on his last outing.
Pineda can always be a quality artist, and a match with a formation that accumulates a lot of K can only help her cause. In fact, Texas hits 9.88 times per game, which is more than anyone else in baseball. Play: UNDER 10 (-110)
Yesterday's result: Yankees-Rays Under 8.5 (loss)
