Home Depot buyers threatened to boycott the store after co-founder Bernie Marcus revealed in a recent interview that he would donate to President Trump's re-election bid.
"Never shop @HomeDepot again," wrote a Twitter user.
"Cut my card," another said.
Marcus, who retired from The Home Depot in 2002, has been a staunch supporter of Trump in the past, though he does not always agree with him.
"It has a sensible approach to most people," Marcus told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in a recent interview, which went round the social media.
"Now, do I agree with every move he makes? No, I will not do it, "said the billionaire." But the truth is that he produced more than anyone else. "" If we look at our country, I'd say we're better today. " that he was there only eight or six years ago ".
Social media users have torn Marcus for his support of Trump, who has been known for a long time. The 90-year-old would have donated $ 7 million to his 2016 presidential campaign – and he is supposed to match that figure or maybe even give more.
"Thanks for inspiring me to shop anywhere else for some tips for home improvement!" Said a woman on Twitter. "I grit my teeth thinking that I have unknowingly helped the #WorstPresidentEver in the last few years."
The hashtag #BoycottHomeDepot became viral Monday night as more and more people heard of Marcus' support for Trump.
"If you are planning to buy a hammer, wood or any Home Depot renovation item, you can also send donations DIRECTLY to the Trump 2020 Campaign," a user tweeted. "No more, @HomeDepot. #BoycottHomeDepot. "
A store representative told MarketWatch that since Marcus retired more than 15 years ago, he "does not speak on behalf of the company."
"In fact, as a rule, the company does not support presidential candidates," said the representative. But social media users did not care.
"I'm going to rot in the bowels of hell before giving a penny again to @HomeDepot," sowed a person.
"Not a carpet, a washer, or a mousetrap from Home Depot," said another. "Not a cent of my money will be directly spent on the re-election of the worst president ever."
However, some users stayed in the corner of Home Depot.
"I'll always shop at Home Depot!" says one person. "A huge thank you for your support to our president! Plus, Home Depot offers a discount to veterans! "
The conservative author Nick Adams wrote"I love the way the liberals are trying to boycott a shop in which we all know they're never going."
Another Twitter user said: "I'm really excited !!! I shop at Home Depot with Americans who respect our president, as we should."
