A passenger filmed the moment when an engine had suffered a massive breakdown on a US flight.

The Delta aircraft was heading to Baltimore but was forced to divert and land at Raleigh, North Carolina.

The 1425 flight was en route to Atlanta when the flight crew decided to hijack the MD-88 aircraft.

Passenger Avery Porch said WMAR-TV that people were very scared.

"After hearing the boom, we saw all that smoke rising in the cabin and that's when we started to panic – about to be the first person to jump."

A Delta Air Lines official said: "The crew of the Delta 1425 flight from Atlanta to Baltimore chose to divert to Raleigh, to the northwest, out of caution, after receiving indications of a problem with one of the engines of the device.

"The flight landed without incident and the customers were relocated to another plane and we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience this hijacking may have caused."

The 148 passengers on board were not injured. Delta stated that customers were placed on a different aircraft.
