Apple kills the MacBook 12 ", and it's a shame

In the course of updating its range of entry-level notebooks, Apple has dropped the 12-inch MacBook – the latest laptop offered unnamed "Pro" or "Air". Rationally, it does not come as a shock. By the time the MacBook 12 "goes out, the company is launching a MacBook Air with a 13" True Tone display at a starting price of $ 1099. Only a little thicker and heavier than the 12 "model, it hits a pretty stitch that is pretty. . . well, sweetie.

Nevertheless, I am sorry to see the MacBook 12 "leave. When I reviewed the original version in 2015, I was impressed by two things: its simplicity similar to that of the iPad and the way it stood as a model for future laptops Mac in general.

With its sleek and stylish design and the use of USB-C for power and connectivity, the 2015 MacBook was indeed a preview of the upcoming reflections for MacBook Air models and Pro to come. (For better and Worse: it's the machine that introduced the now famous low-profile "butterfly" keyboard.) But in the years since its introduction, the MacBook 12 itself has not changed much. It still had a slow processor, and Apple never had the idea to give it two USB-C ports, an upgrade that, at least for me, would have been twice as attractive.

A few years ago, when I decided to replace my MacBook 11, another clever ultraportable that Apple has finished killing, I considered buying a MacBook. however, I opted for a MacBook Pro with a much faster processor, four times more USB-C ports and much more storage. "Today, if I took the same buying decision, I would be happy with a MacBook Air.

All this means that shutting down the MacBook 12 "is not a personal loss for me. But I can not help but compare the MacBook to the original 13-inch MacBook Air, which Steve Jobs unveiled at Macworld Expo in 2008. It was a remarkably slim and lightweight notebook at the time, making it A declaration. It was also expensive, slow and cluttered by a single USB port hidden in a strange folding tray. It was a machine for a limited niche: well-heeled people who appreciated portability above all else.

Three years later, Apple has delivered a new version of the Air much cheaper and more convenient. It was so good, in fact, that it became the ideal notebook of most Apple fans. The new $ 1099 MacBook Air is the direct descendant, seductive for the same reasons as the original.

The 12 "MacBook never had the same kind of thinking that Apple had given the MacBook Air in 2011. Apple, it seems, has concluded that it was addressing a market that did not have the potential to become much bigger. The company may be right, but it would have been fun to see it continue to invest in its Mac laptop, the most compact and the simplest. Hoping that this will come back to the idea one day.
