Yes, it's not your imagination: lawyers are more expensive. But no, Trump's rates are not to blame.

But there are some reasons why the price of popular fruit has increased and should continue to increase in the coming weeks.

For the first week of July, wholesale prices for medium-sized Mexican lawyers were 129% higher than last year, said David Magaña, vice president and senior analyst at Rabobank, Fresno, CA. .

"This is probably the highest price for this time of year for at least a decade," Magaña said.

The increase in wholesale prices has made its way into grocery stores.

According to the most recent report on the US Department of Agriculture's weekly retail prices, the average national price of a Haas lawyer was $ 2.10 on July 5, compared to $ 1.17 July 2018.

Liz Garrison, a nurse from St. Louis Park, Minnesota, said she was shocked when the bag of six small lawyers that she normally buys at Trader Joe's cost $ 6.50 this week. She paid $ 2.50 for the same bag on previous trips.

"I eat a lawyer a day. It's a lot to spend on something I eat so often, "said Garrison.

Why are prices rising?

Magaña outlined three main reasons for the increase.

"One of them is growing, including in the United States, but it's still growing," he said.

California's avocado season is over and is the smallest crop in more than a decade, he said.

"These high prices have to do with seasonal production in Mexico," Magaña said. "It's normally the lowest at this time of year."

Mexico is the largest supplier of fruit and vegetables in the United States, with $ 13 billion imported from the country last year. Nearly 90% of lawyers come from Mexico.

"We had the possibility of tariffs (in Mexico) and closing the border.A few weeks ago, the likelihood of duty on all products from Mexico and we observed some price increases," said Magaña . "But now it's only a combination of supply and demand."

How long will it last?

Although prices may continue to rise over the next two weeks, high prices are only temporary.

"They should go down when the new Mexican production increases in three or four weeks," Magaña said.

Garrison hopes that high prices are not long term. After rationing her latest trader Joe's lawyer last week, she ended up picking two Cub Foods lawyers nearby for $ 4.

"If it's just a few weeks, I would not mind spending the extra money," she said.
