PITTSBURGH – Heavy rains and thunderstorms moving Thursday in the region caused flooding in many places. Instant flood warnings are in effect. Additional rainfall and potentially violent thunderstorms are expected throughout the day.

UPDATE (10:45): A UPMC spokesman issued the following statement regarding flooding near UPMC St. Margaret's Hospital:
"Because of the floods, the police closed the Freeport Road and Brilliant Avenue, thus limiting access to St. Margaret's UPMC. The hospital remains complete and operational. The emergency department remains open. Emergency medical services have access to the hospital by ambulance via Delafield Ave. Patients whose outpatient procedures are planned are notified because some services may be delayed or rescheduled. "
UPDATE (10:40): The Pennsylvania Transportation Department has released the following list of closed or limited public routes in Allegheny County:
- Highway 1001 (Freeport Road) between Brilliant Avenue and Delafield Avenue in Aspinwall is closed to traffic
- Highway 1003 (Kittanning Pike) between Kirkwood Drive and Highway 28 in O'Hara Township is closed to traffic.
- Highway 4004 (Seavey Road) between Soose Road and Evergreen Road in Shaler Township is closed to traffic
- Route 4002 (Geyer Road) between Mt. Troy Road and Babcock Boulevard in the Shaler and Reserve townships are closed to traffic
- I-279 (Parkway North) northbound lane restriction on Mt. Nebo Road in the Township of Ohio

UPDATE (7:40): Floods have been reported on Allegheny River Boulevard in the Nadine Road area of Penn Hills and on Ohio River Boulevard in Leetsdale.
Leetsdale: Ohio River Blvd (Route 65) is flooded in the Ferry Street area. The road will be closed between Ferry Street and Village Drive.

ORIGINAL HISTORY: Thursday will be the occasion of several showers and storms throughout the day.
Some of the storms can be violent with high winds and heavy hail.
