Today, Hulu has very quietly started broadcasting content in 4K resolution. This is the kind of thing you might think about, but we only had a handful of answers on Twitter and a single page of assistance.
But nevertheless, the 4K resolution is back. But with caveats.
First of all, it is supported only on two hardware components. And these are Apple TV 4K – which we still consider to be the best streaming box you can buy. It's also available on Chromecast Ultra, which is a great option if you're not afraid to use your phone a lot and do not need a streaming box.
The 4K resolution is also currently limited to Hulu's original programming. The good news is that this includes exceptional cases such as The servant's tale, Veronica Mars, prostitutes, Catch-22 and more. The bad news is that there is a lot of content that was not created by Hulu, but still deserves ultra-high definition love. But more is pity.
The other good news is that Hulu does not charge any extra for watching its 4K broadcasts. The same can not be said of Netflix, for example, which needs its highest level to achieve optimal resolution. Who can say if that will always be the case?
One last thing: if you want to enjoy the higher resolution, Hulu says you will need an internet connection with at least 16 Mbps downstream. Chances are you are experiencing this. But if not, it's time to call your Internet Service Provider.
