Max Iyama, a former four-star rookie and current Gamecock lineman, is struggling with medical problems and is no longer part of the South Carolina football team, GamecockCentral.com has learned.

Iyama will no longer play football after a medical problem announced after the 2018 season. Under the NCAA rules, medical difficulties allow an athlete student to remain a bursary without counting the limit of 85 scholarships of a program.

Iyama was redshirt last season and did not participate in spring training in 2019; Head Coach Will Muschamp is dealing with this medical problem.

The coaching staff never explained the situation and Muschamp said in March that the Gamecocks hoped it would be available once the season started.

"It has not been cleared yet. We are still working on this process and this has been very frustrating for Max and for us too, "Muschamp said in March to update Iyama's health. "We will make sure his health is the most important thing."

The offensive lineman was a five-star rookie of 5.88 graduating from Murfreesboro High School in Tennessee, engaged in South Carolina with offers from Georgia, Louisville, Tennessee and many other SEC programs.
