Blinded by the light: the exuberant musical Bruce Springsteen would not exist without the Brexit

"It's about Bruce, if you're a Bruce fan, you'll see something different, otherwise you'll like it.You'll like it.You could become a [Bruce] fan as a result of the movie ".

It's the author Sarfraz Manzoor who talks about Blinded by the Light, based on his teenage years. Manzoor and director Gurinder Chadha stopped by CNET to discuss the film, which opened Friday.

Blinded By The Light takes place in 1987 in Luton, England (think Milwaukee or Detroit in the United States). Times are tough financially and politically, with much unemployment and neo-fascism on the rise. Javed (played by Viveik Kalra), a 16-year-old who dreams of being a writer despite his very traditional Pakistani family, insists that he pursue a more sensible job.

For a moment of desperation, a comrade gives Javed two cassettes of Bruce Springsteen – born in the United States and Darkness on the outskirts of the city – and Javed's vision changes instantly. Springsteen's music speaks more of the struggles that he and his family face than the traditional Pakistani music that his father listens to with dedication.

Blinded by the Light is Chadha's latest film, best known perhaps for his 2002 film Bend It Like Beckham – yeah, the one with Keira Knightley. Blinded By The Light is as funny as it is authentic. Like Bend It Like Beckham, Chadha mixes humor (there are many), hope, social activism and complete musical numbers in a wonderfully balanced and entertaining film.

Springsteen 's songs are skilfully integrated into the story, sometimes discreetly emphasizing a scene and other times in the form of full numbers on music with songs and dances. The film is shot through Javed's eyes, allowing the audience to feel inflamed by Springsteen's words and performances.

The chief's words speak to Javed as writings of a prophet. I found myself deeply in touch with Springsteen's songs for the first time and wondered why I had not done it before.

"We could have used any of these songs," Chadha said. "I wanted to make sure we were not doing a jukebox musical, I was sitting with all the lyrics in front of me as I drafted and ensured that each lyrics matched the original." The story of Javed. "

The directors of Blinded By The Light talk about Bruce Springsteen …

In one scene, Promised Land's lyrics – "Take a knife and cut that pain out of my heart" – are literally projected larger than life over Javed. I do not know if there will ever be a musical or biographical film about Bruce Springsteen, but Blinded by the Light is perhaps the best manifestation of his music you can hope for in a movie. Hearing your songs on a Dolby sound system is a real treat. His experience of music through this new perspective has made me understand how his words resonate with our current political, cultural and economic struggles in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Most of what we see going through Javed has actually happened to Manzoor. In 2008, he wrote about growing up in a Pakistani family and becoming a Bruce fan in Greetings from Bury Park: A Memoir. For years, Chadha and Manzoor intended not to turn the book into a film, but it took a major political event to launch the film.

"I did not want to repeat myself after Bend It Like Beckham, and then the Brexit took place," said Chadha wearing a Bruce Springsteen t-shirt. "I was so angry at all the xenophobia around us that I said:" I have to do something about it. " And that's when I said: "We have to do this movie next." "Http://www.cnet.com/"

Sometimes, many musical numbers appear in Blinded By The Light.

Blinded By The Light is exuberant and proudly embraces the themes of love, ambition and the importance of the family. It vogue in the world of British pop culture and fashion from the late 80s. There are many teenagers wearing a single earring in gold cross, a jacket with epaulets, a tracer for the eyes and about a pound of Aquanet hairspray on perfectly tamed mules. One of my favorite moments: Javed, dressed in a checkered shirt with cut sleeves and a red bandanna tied around his neck, dances in a crowd of trendy teenagers with colorful hair that fix their look with horror.

What Springsteen thought of the movie? After a screening, Chadra said, "He approached me, kissed me, hugged me and thanked me for taking care of me so well, do not change anything, I love him. . " Http://www.cnet.com/ "
