TORONTO (AP) – After seeing his team use seven pitchers on Saturday, Mariners left-handed Yusei Kikuchi wanted to give the bullpen a break.
His first big white game perfectly did the trick.
Mariners 7, Blue Jays 0: Scored points
Kikuchi needed only 96 shots to finish Sunday his two-pointer program that led the Mariners to a 7-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays, Seattle's third shutout of the season.
Kikuchi (5-8) pulled eight, scored a goal and pulled out the last 14 batters in his first win since winning against Baltimore on June 23. The southpaw rookie went to 0-3 with a time of 6.53 in eight starts, or 40 innings between wins.
"It's a decisive day for the team, I felt like I could progress," Kickuchi said through a translator. "I did not get the results I expected and I felt like I was good for the team today, so I was proud of it."
Kikuchi, 28, was a star in Japan before signing a $ 56 million four-year contract with Seattle during the off-season. It was his 26th start for the Mariners and his first full match.
"Yusei was really focused today," said manager Scott Servais. "Exceptional, heck of an exit.If you can start a full game anywhere and anytime in the big leagues in less than 100 shots, nothing will be better than that."
Tom Murphy scored a two-run homer and the Mariners went deep four times. Kyle Seager, Austin Nola and Keon Broxton have added solo tours for Seattle.
"From top to bottom, guys contribute big circuits, which is great," said Servais. "That's what it takes."
Toronto was scoreless for the 10th time and the second time in six games. The Blue Jays, who were whisked 11 times in total last season, lost 1-0 last Sunday in a Yankees-seeded game by Masahiro Tanaka.
Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo, without the injured sluggers, Vladimir Gurrero Jr. (left knee) and goaltender Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (left quadriceps), said Kikuchi was able to take advantage of the exhausted Toronto squad.
"It was a combination of him doing his job and our approach was not very good today," said Montoyo.
Seager extended his streak of strikes to a 12-game high of the season with a first goal against Toronto's first game, Wilmer Font, in second, his 16th of the season and his second in two games.
Seager dominated seven times in his streak and 10 times in a sequence in which he was beaten safely in 22 of 23 games.
Seager's counterpart was Font's first win in five appearances earlier this month. The right handed 9 1/3 innings without giving up the race. Font is 2-1 with Toronto and Tampa Bay this season and 3-3 overall after 1-1 in 15 games with the New York Mets in April and May.
Thomas Pannone took over in the third and the Mariners shone twice in three sets. Nola hit a first shot, his sixth, and Murphy hit a two-run practice, his 13th.
Broxton qualified 5-0 with a pass from former right-hander Sam Gaviglio of the Mariners in seventh place.
Kikcuhi set the first six batters before Brandon Drury doubled to start the third. Drury almost doubled when goaltender Dee Gordon made a quick stop on Billy McKinney's short rocket, but second-baseman Nola could not hold Gordon's shot. Bo Bichette flew to end the heat.
Randal Grichuk hit a single in fourth in the fourth period, but Kikuchi eliminated Teoscar Hernandez and forced Justin Smoak to fly.
Rowdy Tellez of Toronto started the fifth inning, but Danny Jansen got the better of the doubles match.
TRAINER ROOM
Mariners: SS J.P. Crawford had the day off.
Blue Jays: An MRI on the left knee of 3B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. showed no major damage, and the rookie slugger will not need a relay on the injured list. Guerrero modified his knee in defense on Saturday and left after two innings. It is day to day. Guerrero said the injury was not as bad as the left knee injury that left him out for more than a month at Double-A last season.
