Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend (Indiana), Democratic presidential candidate, said Sunday that people who voted for President Trump in the 2020 election "were looking at racism differently."

CNN's Jake Tapper bluntly asked Buttigieg about State of the Union if it was a "racist act" to vote for Trump.

Buttigieg and other 2020 Democrats have criticized Trump in recent weeks for making racist and xenophobic comments about four women members of Congress.

The mayor of South Bend explicitly referred to Trump as a racist during a speech at the National Urban League last month in Indianapolis, one of the first times that Buttigieg has referred to the president in such a hard tone.

"My generation saw this country elect its first black president, then turn around and elect a racist in the White House – and we should call it that as it is," Buttigieg said to the crowd's applause.
