Google is working on a local fast share file sharing feature for Android Q, intended to replace its Android Beam feature. But Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo have their own plans and jointly announce a local file sharing standard that will be featured on all their phones.
The news, spotted by The edge, was announced on the account MIUI Weibo – what are you waiting then? The function uses Bluetooth and allows transfer speeds of up to 20 MB per second. Presumably, it uses Wi-Fi after initial pairing via Bluetooth, much like Google's Local File Sharing feature.
The companies said the new file-sharing standard would not require any third-party applications, apparently being hidden in their Android skin. In addition, the trio says the new feature supports a variety of file formats.
Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo added that they hoped more suppliers would support the standard. According to Counterpoint Research, The report on global smartphone shipments in the second quarter of 2019 indicates that the three companies account for more than 24% of shipments during the quarter. But by adding the likes of OnePlus, Realme and the industry giant, Huawei could make this file-sharing feature a must-have item on the majority of Android phones around the world.
This feature is particularly interesting for the Chinese market, where Google's services and features are often removed from Android. Thus, an integrated standard of file sharing between devices is probably more important in this market.
The trio says that the feature will be available at the end of the month. Compatible phones have not been announced, but you can probably expect their flagship devices to offer this feature down the line. We do not know if this file sharing standard will be applied to Western phones. We have contacted Xiaomi and Oppo for more details and will update the article when we receive more information.
