ENGLEWOOD, Colorado – Former head coach Mike Shanahan has not returned to coaching because the elements were not entirely correct, but he believes that all the elements are there for his son Kyle and the 49ers can succeed.
It was a homecoming for Mike and Kyle Shanahan to return to Broncos headquarters during the training camp. Mike spent several years in Denver as a coach before becoming a head coach in 1995, where he remained for more than a decade.
After his time at the Broncos, Mike spent four seasons as head coach in Washington with Kyle as offensive coordinator. Mike was dismissed in late 2013 and has not been a coach since. However, he revealed that he had options available to him at the time.
"Close, I was close," said Shanahan. "One thing that must happen is that we all have to be on the same page. When you are a football head coach, you need to make sure that the owner, the general manager and the quarterback are all on the same page.
"If that does not happen, the chances of winning a Super Bowl are not very good. Anyway, if this situation occurred, I would support it. Otherwise … But finally, I had a great conversation with John [Elway]as everyone knows, it did not work and it sometimes worked for the right reasons. "
For his part, Mike thinks that Kyle has an ideal scenario in Santa Clara.
"I think he's in a great position," Mike said. "You have the opportunity to ask a certain John Lynch to take on the role of Executive Director, as part of the support staff I had the chance to talk to, aside from Mr. York."

Mike has been practicing the 49ers since Kyle was named head coach. He was also fortunate enough to break the movie with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo while he was recovering from his ACL injury.

Kyle explained what it meant to have his father at workout and evoked their memories of time spent together in Denver.
