Howard University is bringing back its golf teams for the first time in decades – with great help from NBA star Stephen Curry.
Curry announced Monday that he would financially support the Bison golf teams for the next six years. Howard, a historically black University of Washington, DC, plans to set up men's and women's teams for the 2020-2021 season.
Curry, three-time NBA champion and two-time MVP, is expected to attend a press conference at school on Monday.
Howard has already played golf at Division II; School officials believe that his teams were disbanded in the 1970s. The school will begin a search for coaches, potential players and a practice course and competitive rounds in the coming months.
Curry, who attended Davidson College, began to interest himself in returning Bison golf teams after meeting Howard, senior and golfer, Otis Ferguson IV, during a visit to campus to view a documentary film in January.
"Golf is a sport that has changed my life in a less tangible but equally powerful way," Curry said in a statement. "It's a discipline that challenges your mental capacity for patience and concentration, and that is impossible to truly control, so when you hear about these passionate student athletes who have talent but do not have a It's hard to play at the game, and I feel really honored to play a small role in the rich history of Howard University. "
Curry has played golf in his high school team and has appeared as an amateur golfer and celebrity at tournaments during his career in the NBA. In 2017, he shot a first round of 74 while he was playing on an exemption to the classic Ellie Mae from the Web.com Tour. He shot 71 in the same event next year. He missed the cut in both tournaments.
Curry is also co-host of ABC's television show "Holey-Moley".
