Duo, its video chat application, is adding a low-light mode that can detect poor lighting conditions and automatically adjust the image to brighten the face in the frame.
In a press release, Google says that this new mode will be a boon to those who wish to save electricity, especially if you, or someone you know, live in a place affected by frequent power cuts. It might be ideal to use when you want to register with a friend or family member who lives in multiple time zones and can call from a dark room or a night street.
Interestingly, the low light mode on Duo is simulated in the application depending on the lighting conditions; Google does not mention any dependencies on the features of your phone's camera. And it does not seem that Duo simply increases the brightness of the screen for a selfie flash effect. Until we try this feature, we will have to accept Google's word that it works as shown in the GIF above.
The low light mode is being rolled out globally this week for iOS and Android users, so watch out for the update.
