In recent months, online users have reported a problem with OnePlus 7 Pro, in which the device spontaneously turns off (or simply displays a black screen). Once this is done, there does not seem to be any obvious way to restart it.

The problem only seems to concern a small number of users, but it is a recurring problem since the launch of the device in May. You can view this thread on OnePlus official support forums or on several Reddit feeds (such as this one or this one) for more information.

We have contacted OnePlus to find out more about the problem and what users should do to solve it, but have not yet received an answer. In the meantime, we will do our best to summarize what is happening and what you can do if the OnePlus 7 Pro shutdown problem occurs on your device.

In most cases, the unit shuts down completely and pressing the power button – or even holding it down for a moment – does not turn it back on. When this happens, some users try different ways to recover it. Some leave it attached to a charger overnight, some try to charge it with non-OEM wall cables / adapters, and some try different combinations of buttons.

The shutdown problem is quite simple: the device turns off spontaneously and does not come back on normally.

Some users have returned the device directly to OnePlus or the third party merchant to which they have purchased it. Even after that, however, a few selected users found that the same problem was affecting the replacement device.

The problem of OnePlus 7 Pro shutdown seems to be related to the software. As such, it should be fairly easy to fix a hotfix. However, since OnePlus has not officially acknowledged the problem, we do not know when this fix will arrive.

What can you do if it happens on your phone?

Fortunately, there seems to be a fairly simple way to turn your OnePlus 7 Pro on again if you experience a spontaneous shutdown.

If you experience the OnePlus 7 Pro shutdown problem, simply hold down the power button and volume up button simultaneously for 10 to 15 seconds. After that, the device must be turned back on normally with all your settings and data intact.

If the problem should reoccur in the future, simply repeat the power button / volume up solution each time.

Holding down the power button and the volume up button for 10 to 15 seconds will typically turn the unit back on.

Unfortunately, it does not appear that there is a foolproof way to prevent the problem of stopping the OnePlus 7 Pro. For the record, some users reported that scheduling automatic shutdowns and reboots had solved the problem. To schedule an automatic shutdown, simply head to Settings> Utilities> Programmed On / Off. You can then set a timeout for the device and a power-on delay. We suggest that this happens while you sleep (this will not affect your alarms).

Hopefully, OnePlus will recognize and treat this issue in the near future. We found a user who contacted a OnePlus technical support representative and who stated that the problem will benefit from a software solution by the end of August 2019.
