The Oklahoma coach, Lincoln Riley, officially designated Monday title defender Jalen Hurts as starting quarterback for his first game of the season.

Hurts, who spent the first three years of his career in Alabama, was 26-2 in his career at Crimson Tide before joining the Sooners as a graduate. The Houston area product has competed this season with rookie Tshirt Mannerah and rookie Spencer Rattler.

Hurts' vast initial experience in a coaching program, which included annual trips to college football matches, made him the favorite to be the starter upon his arrival at Norman. He had 23 career touchdowns, a school record for a quarterback from Alabama and was responsible for 71 touchdowns, second best in Tide's history. He has 7,602 offensive yards and 48 touchdowns to his name.

The Sooners open the season on Sunday, Sept. 1, in Houston.
