Insomniac Games, one of the most consistent game developers of PlayStation, has been officially acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Monday's announcement did not include any term.

"We have a special relationship with PlayStation virtually since our inception," said Insomniac's founder and CEO, Ted Price, in the announcement of the acquisition. "Our partnership amplifies our potential, and Marvel's Spider-Man was a testament to that. "

It's easy to assume that Insomniac has already worked as an "original" Sony gaming studio. The developer has been responsible for some of the biggest exclusive franchises at PlayStation throughout the life of this console, including Ratchet & Clank, Resistance and the phenomenal performance of last year. Marvel's Spider-Man.

However, the developer began to engage in multi-platform efforts in the 10s, including the Xbox-only (formerly) platform game. Sunset Overdrive and some exclusive VR games at Oculus. In fact, Insomniac always puts the finishing touches to Stormlands, arguably the most impressive VR game exclusive to Oculus to date, which has yet to release date despite more than a year of public demonstrations.

In an email response to Ars Technica, Facebook officials confirmed that "Stormlands will be launched as planned" despite this acquisition. The VR game is currently an exclusive Oculus, and we have no reason to believe that it will change. the game finally landed on Sony's own PlayStation VR headset.

The news comes shortly after Sony's biggest console rival, Xbox, announces a series of major gaming studio acquisitions for its own Xbox gaming studios over the past year. Microsoft's acquisition series is part of a broader trajectory correction on the part of the Xbox after the disastrous results of the Don Mattrick era of the console, which is over in 2013 with the taking of Xbox bar by Phil Spencer. We can only guess if Microsoft (or any other gaming platform holder) had pursued a similar acquisition agreement before Insomniac signed with Sony.
