Reddit is testing something that, if successful, could help them get started on platforms like Twitch and YouTube – live streaming. The company today announced its first delivery tool, which it calls "Reddit Public Access Network." The software will allow eligible users to stream live to a new subdirectory called r / pan.
Users who wish to listen to broadcasts can do so directly from the subreddit, but major feeds will appear on the Reddit home page throughout the test period, according to a blog post. Users will also be able to vote on their favorite feed, similar to the positive voting system of Reddit, which will dictate what appears on the homepage.
Not everyone will be able to broadcast. The company is "incredibly wise with the deployment of RPAN," he says, and has even created additional policies specifically for people using the new feature. There are obvious rules – no pornography, no illegal or dangerous behavior, for example – but the new Reddit policy also states that border behavior is also prohibited.
If stream content normally triggers quarantine on the site (a term used by Reddit to mean restricted or hidden), it should not appear in the stream. This includes promoting ideologies or behaviors "that average redditors may find very offensive or upsetting, or that encourage hoaxes." This would suggest that hate waves or floods propagating erroneous information are not allowed.
Reddit seems to be making moderation a major priority. Streaming will only be allowed between 9am and 5pm (Pacific Time) during the five days of testing. This allows the company to have dedicated employees ready to tackle the moderation problems that arise or the concerns of the viewers. This is not surprising given the current issues with live streaming. In the last six months alone, mass shooters have used the tool in the past to spread their attacks, leaving companies like Facebook and YouTube scrambling to remove re-downloaded images.
"We are 100% committed to ensuring that RPAN content remains safe and secure for work," reads the article. We will be watching RPAN programs very closely.
