A man from eastern Texas who claimed to have drowned his girlfriend's 3-year-old nephew, whom he thought was pregnant, was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole, announced Monday prosecutors.
Bobby Woods, 21, was convicted on Friday of the murder that killed Mason Cuttler in 2015.
The investigators said that Woods had told the police that his girlfriend Billie Jean Cuttler was pregnant and that he had killed her because he wanted to make room in his house, which housed three families at the time.
A lawyer said that Cuttler was not pregnant.

Woods told police that he had pushed the toddler into a pond near Lufkin, 110 km northeast of Houston, had turned his back on him and let him drown.
His body was found on August 18, 2015, a day after his disappearance. Cutter pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder in exchange for 20 years in prison.
Associated Press contributed to this report.
