SIE President Shawn Layden discusses the new contract, what it means for Insomniac's development and the company's strategy for studio and talent acquisition.
Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced Monday the acquisition of Marvel's Spider-Man and Ratchet & Ratchet developer Insomniac Games (the terms of the contract have not been disclosed).
The acquisition made Insomniac the 14th studio to join SIE's lineup at the company's international studios, alongside developers such as Horizon Zero Dawn manufacturer of guerrilla games and dreams and Little big planet Media Molecule studio.
If Insomniac has a long-standing relationship with Sony since the 1990s and the Spyro the dragon series, the developer has remained independent, despite being one of the most profitable and well-known video game developers in the world. With the success of Spider-Man from last year (the game has sold over three million copies during its first three days and has sold to more than nine million in the world since its launch last September), Sony has officially acquired the studio in its entirety.

How long has this agreement been in preparation?
Insomniac has been our partner for more than 20 years and I have been working with Ted and his team since the beginning of Spyro the dragon. Since then, they have continued to make Ratchet & Clank Series, Resistance: Fall of Man and more recently, Spider Man, which from all angles seems to have been a pretty successful venture. We are known for a long time. Is the most important thing about acquiring talent or studios appropriate to your culture? Do they arrange with the studio that you are and the one you want to become? Insomniac is the ideal solution for international studios. They bring quality and innovation, the two things we look at anytime. I can not say enough good things about Ted and his team. We are simply delighted.
Why now? The success of Marvel's Spider-Man to weigh in this decision?
Sure. Spider-Man emphasizes how important Insomniac is to the game as a whole. They are an impact maker. They are a style designer. In this independent sphere, there are only a few studios that have reached a level of achievement comparable to Insomniac. They are a very rare bird and we felt that the time had come to formalize the relationship.
What changes for Insomniac and your relationship now that they are under the fold?
For Insomniac themselves, nothing changes at all. It's a fantastic studio, they provide fantastic content. I do not think anyone will want to go there and tell them how to do a match. They certainly had their own game. I think what Worldwide Studios provides them is a closer relationship with innovation – whether it's technology or game design. We have several teams with extraordinary talent in creating games. We are now in a place where all our teams exchange technologies, techniques and innovations from one studio to another to become better and stronger. I think there are only additive natures. Nothing will change their culture or their ability to offer the fabulous games they have been doing for 20 years.
What does this acquisition mean for a series like Sunset Overdrive, which was a Microsoft exclusive?
It was an excellent experience for Insomniac and they also learned a lot from that. As for the IP address itself, we really have not sent the files on this one to see what it really means, to be honest. We love what they did in the Spider Man franchise and things like Ratchet & Ratchet are certainly vital series in the present and the future. That's what we focus on.
Do you focus on existing intellectual property or creating new intellectual property with Insomniac?
All Worldwide Studios studios manage their franchise projects and IP addresses in the way that best suits them. Insomniac will not be different that way. We will see with what they walk. If they have ideas on new game concepts, what each team does, we will anticipate the future with great anticipation.
What is Sony's approach to studio acquisition?
