The midfielder beat Marcus Rashford, who was successful after the game against Chelsea in the first weekend of the season. After that, a minority of fans sent him racist abuse on Twitter.

United opened an incident investigation to identify responsible supporters and promised to take "the most energetic course of action" against anyone found involved.

A statement issued Tuesday by the club said: "Everyone in Manchester United is disgusted by the racial abuse directed against Paul Pogba and we condemn them unreservedly.

"The people who have expressed these opinions do not represent the values of our great club and it is encouraging to see the vast majority of our fans condemning this also on social media.

"Manchester United has zero tolerance for any form of racism or discrimination and a long-standing commitment to campaign against it through our #AllRedAllEqual initiative.

"We will strive to identify the few people involved in these incidents and take the measures that are required. We also encourage social media companies to take action in these cases."

Defender United Harry Maguire added"Disgusting Social Media Must Do Something Every open account must be verified with a passport / driver's license Stop these pathetic trolls who do countless accounts to mistreat people."

Speaking after the match, coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer defended Pogba's decision to override Rashford and take the penalty spot himself.

Pogba, who was associated with an Old Trafford start this summer, has been out of the tournament four times in the past year. Rashford was in goal against Chelsea and in the last minute of the spectacular Champions League game against Paris Saint-Germain last season.
