Richard Childress is no longer a member of the National Rifle Association Board of Directors.

Childress submitted its resignation in a letter dated Monday, August 19, two days after the NRA co-sponsored the NASCAR Cup Series race on Saturday night at the Bristol Motor Speedway.

"At this point, it is necessary that I focus fully on my activities," said the owner of the NASCAR team and the Hall of Fame in a statement. "I owe it to my employees, to my partners, to my family and to myself. Since I proudly accepted to serve on the NRA Board of Directors, I have supported the organization and its important mission of preserving and protecting our constitutional rights. But when, as now, I am no longer able to fully take on the commitment I have made, it is time for me to withdraw. I reached this point in my ability to continue serving the NRA. As such, I have to resign.

NRA has co-sponsored the Bristol Night Race since 2016. The Bristol sponsorship came after the group had previously sponsored the Texas Motor Speedway Spring Run.

NRA President Oliver North resigned in April. Childress read North's letter of resignation at the board meeting of the organization. Since North's resignation, stories about the use of money and conflict within the organization have come to light as donations have declined for the group. The Washington Post and other media reported earlier in August that NRA chief executive, Wayne Lapierre, had planned to buy a Texas mansion with $ 6 million in funding as a result of the shooting in the Parkland.

Childress is the fifth board member to resign this month. He had previously taken office as Senior Vice President of the NRA in 2017.

Richard Childress Racing, who has driven a car for seven-time champion Dale Earnhardt for much of his career, currently has two cars in the Cup series and one car in the Xfinity series. With Tyler Reddick leading the Xfinity points standings with four wins, Austin Dillon – the grandson of Childress – is ranked 23rd in the points standings and Daniel Hemric in 25th.
