The tragedy struck Amanda Anisimova, a 17-year-old American star, and her family.
Tennis.Life has learned that Konstantin Anisimov, Anisimova's father and long-time coach, was found dead on Monday.
No confirmed information is yet available on what happened. Anisimov was not known to have been sick.
Apparently, he was alone when he was found and may have had a heart attack.
Anisimov would only be 53 years old.
(His agent, Max Eisenbud, confirmed the news to ESPN's Alyssa Roenigk on Tuesday night and IMG's public relations department also confirmed this information to Tennis.Life).
In 1998, with his wife Olga, they emigrated from Russia to the United States with their eldest daughter, Maria. The Anisimov have divorced in recent years.
Amanda was born three years later and, with her father as a coach, quickly climbed the ladder and was semi-finalist at Roland Garros earlier this year.
But in parallel with his meteoric rise – and the resumption of his career by the huge agency IMG, coach Anisimov (although not the father) had been to some extent dismissed.
Anisimova will turn 18 on August 31.
We were told that Anisimova – rightly – was withdrawing from the US Open, which starts in a week. She would have been the No. 24 seed, just two years after winning the junior event.
She had withdrawn from Toronto and Cincinnati with a back problem.
What an unspeakable tragedy for a young girl.
My sincere condolences to her and the rest of her family.
