Shawn Poindexter, injured in ACL, fears new 49ers receiver

Jimmy Garoppolo has a mental barrier to overcome to be the kind of quarterback he and the 49ers – not to mention the team's fans – expect him to become.

It is natural that a player, no matter what, who comes back from a serious injury must overcome the mental problem. This occurs when he no longer thinks about the injury or that he can simply react naturally and instinctively.

In the case of Garoppolo, it is his front leg when he throws passes. He suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the third week of last season in Kansas City.

This knee, which has been equipped with a voluminous and light splint, comes closest to the imminent passing of the passes.

Garoppolo has always used a vast repertoire of styles of passes, sometimes flat with different arm angles. But it seemed to be more pronounced on Monday. He did not appear to be throwing in a 1-on-6 with an interception and a zero-yard pass against the Denver Broncos in his pre-season debut.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday during a teleconference with Bay Area reporters that he was not worried about the largely futile sequence of 11 games of Garoppolo and the first 49ers attack.

"We always want to play better, but worry about more than 10 games, it's pretty irresponsible," Shanahan said.

Similarly, Garoppolo did not admit any concerns after the match. He said he was already looking forward to returning to the field, where he should make a longer outing during the third week of the pre-season.

"It's something I have not done in a year, obviously, so I have to beat the rust and everything else," Garoppolo said. But this is the first step to return to it. "

The next game of the 49ers, Saturday night in Kansas City, should provide another update on the return of Garoppolo.

In general, Garoppolo's return was uneventful – even "flawless", in the words of General Manager John Lynch. Of course, Monday was also the first time in 11 months that he was facing a defense that was not instructed to keep his distance.

But even in these practices against his team mates, Garoppolo seemed to have a hard time succeeding and standing out from the passes in which he was not throwing. This was particularly evident Friday during a practice against the Broncos when Garoppolo threw an interception while Von Miller was down, close to his left leg.

After Monday's game, Garoppolo said that he was not considering his knee as a problem.

"Honestly, I really did not think so, so I'm happy about that," said Garoppolo, "in general, that did not bother me too much."

It is quite possible that Garoppolo did not consciously realize that he was wary of the very natural tendency to protect himself.

Maybe Monday's game has fulfilled its role. Perhaps Garoppolo has crossed the mental obstacle to return to the fight against an enemy defense that wants to hit him and hit him hard.

The next barrier to be crossed is the moment when he absorbs his first big success.

"I think these will come naturally," Garoppolo said. "It's football and you know what you're signing up for and everything, so I think it's worth wanting that. I think I will build that in due course. "
