Netflix's new upcoming version tracking feature could help retain subscribers – TechCrunch

In the hope of retaining viewers with its content, Netflix today announced the launch of a new section called "Latest" in its TV application, designed to highlight the recent and future versions of the streaming service. The addition is not limited to one or two lines in the main Netflix home page. Instead, the "Latest" section has its own dedicated area in the Netflix TV app, accessible from the left navigation bar.

Here it is under the "Home" button and above the links to the dedicated "Movies" and "TV Shows" pages.

The section will be customized according to the end user, based on its viewing history, the company says.

At the top of "Latest" is a line that shows the new content that has arrived this week, followed by two lines indicating the content that should arrive this week and the next.

Users can also click on these future versions and set alerts to remind them of the TV show or movie they want to watch.

Netflix indicates that this feature is now available worldwide on its TV app, which means you'll only find it on streaming devices such as Fire TV, Apple TV or Roku, for example, or on other smart TV platforms or gaming console. However, the company told TechCrunch that she already had a similar feature for Android users and that she was currently testing the section "Latest" on iOS.

The company first talked about this addition to Variety, adding that custom suggestions were updated several times a day.

Netflix's Director of Product Innovation, Cameron Johnson, told the store that this experience was similar, in a way, to movie trailers, as it also aimed to get people interested in future releases.

"Netflix continues to be a pioneer in developing a better streaming member experience. The "Latest News" feature will help people discover the new and upcoming content they will like in a simple, fun and easy way, "Johnson told TechCrunch.

However, the launch comes at a time when people will soon be taking into account the value they receive from their Netflix subscription. The company recently posted a disappointing quarter, announcing the loss of US subscribers for the first time since 2011 and the estimated lack of estimates estimated at 5 million additional subscribers, adding 2.7 million new subscribers in the US. world.

The flute attributed its decline to the light content of its slate. In the second quarter, as in the black comedy Dead to Me and in the limited edition When They See Us, the original content of Netflix is becoming a formula and a copy.

He now produces his own version of Project Runway and offers a series of shows that are obviously inspired by popular hits (if it's not exactly those of reality TV), like Million Dollar Listing, say yes to the dress, Cupcake Wars, Top Chef, The Bachelor, Real Housewives and others. He manages to catch beloved stars, but then puts them in a mediocre rate. He disappoints with his original films by numbers.

That said, Netflix deserves congratulations for everything it has accomplished since its inception as a mail order service. Today, thanks to its multibillion dollar investment in original content, the streamer is best known for its own successes, such as Orange Is the New Black or House of Cards, for example.

But, while the content of his catalog is abandoned in favor of internal production, his image has also changed. It's no longer seen as a one-stop shop for everything you want to watch, combined with a rich palette of quality originals. And now he's about to lose some of his most popular licensed content – Friends and The Officewhile traditional media licensees enter the streaming market.

According to Variety, in July, the contents of NBCU, Disney / Fox and Warner Bros. accounted for 60% to 65% of Netflix's viewing hours.

Now, Netflix is facing competition from Disney +, which will reduce the price of Netflix to $ 6.99 per month and will be offered in a $ 12.99 per month package that also includes Hulu and ESPN +. This is the same price as the standard US Netflix plan.

More than ever, Netflix needs to keep its viewers locked, and one of the best ways to do this is to remind them that there are new movies and shows that they will want to watch.
