Microsoft says they have "no plans" to publish Xbox exclusives on competing consoles after the surprise announcement that Ori and the Blind Forest arrive at the Switch. In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, the company said existing plans for porting Microsoft IP on different platforms would continue, but that Xbox Game Studios would now be dedicated to creating games exclusively for Microsoft's own platforms.
Fortunately, it does not appear that Microsoft is moving away from cross-play because the statement continues to express support for this. "We continue to believe deeply in cross-games and game progression with the flexibility that developers need to ensure a fair and fun experience."
Xbox Game Studios has experienced a period of studio acquisition in recent years, reinforcing support for exclusive exclusives leading to the release of the successor to Xbox One, codenamed Project Scarlett, at the end of 2020. That did not prevent games like Cuphead from expanding to other platforms, as he did with the switch earlier this year. Outer Worlds, from Microsoft studio, Obsidian, will also be releasing on Switch and PS4 in October, as planned. However, it seems that future versions of Obsidian and other studios acquired by Microsoft will be exclusively for Microsoft platforms.
Microsoft seems to take steps to counter the idea that its consoles, and especially the Xbox One, does not tend to be accompanied by many exclusives. Even titles exclusive to Microsoft are often available on PCs, making the Xbox difficult to sell for players who favor proprietary exclusives.
Xbox One does not completely exclude its exclusivities – we even put together a list of the best of them.
