A former judge spent time in jail for attacking his wife years ago. Now he is suspicious in his death

Lance Mason, 51, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder; murder; criminal aggression; violate a protection order; and great flight in the death of Aisha Fraser.

"I wish to take responsibility for the crimes I've committed," Mason said Tuesday before the Cuyahoga County Court in northeastern Ohio. "I do not wish to prolong or delay it, nor to hurt more than my family or Aisha's," Mason said.

A plea agreement with prosecutors calls for Mason's sentence to life imprisonment for the aggravated murder leader, Judge John Haas said. But at the time of sentencing, the judge will decide if Mason will be eligible for parole after at least 20, 25 or 30 years of service.

Sentencing is scheduled for September 12.

According to authorities, Mason fatally stabbed Fraser while arriving at a Shaker Heights home with the couple's children aged 8 and 11. He then stole his vehicle and went aboard a police officer's vehicle, injuring him as well, the police said.

Mason had served a prison sentence for attacking Fraser in 2014.

Mason was a judge sitting at the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court when he was charged with the 2014 attack.

Prior to serving on the bench, he served as a senator from Ohio State from January 2007 to September 2008 and was previously a state representative. For five years he was one of the most minority members of the House's criminal justice committee.

He was also deputy county attorney for three years in the 1990s.
