A member of the "Miracle" hockey team, who won the Olympic gold medal for the US team in 1980, is still imprisoned Wednesday in northeastern Minnesota, accused of attacking a neighbor with a metal mast after fishing.
Mark Pavelich was sentenced to Cook County Jail on Thursday night and appeared in Cook County Court Monday, charged with second and third degree assault, possession of an illegal shotgun and receive a firearm with a modified or missing serial number.
Pavelich, 61, a real estate developer from Lutsen, is being held in detention instead of a $ 250,000 bail and must be the subject of a hearing to be able to stand trial. He is scheduled to return to court on October 20. The judicial records do not yet indicate legal advice for him.
The sheriff's office said his deputies had been sent on a call about an assault in the Lutsen area. A 63-year-old man said he was hit with a metal pipe by Pavelich after returning from fishing. Pavelich accused the man of "boosting his beer," according to his complaint.
Pavelich has been a loner ever since he and his other amateur skaters played David and knocked out the world with their Miracle victory over the Goliath game, known as the Soviets. This triumph in the semifinal at the Olympics propelled Pavelich and other Americans into the immortality of modern sport and on the podium for the gold medal in Lake Placid.
On the side of Pavelich, the creative center that played for Eveleth High School and the University of Minnesota, Duluth, contributed to the goal of Mike Eruzione's victory against the Soviets. The history of Team USA became the Hollywood hit "Miracle" in 2004.
Pavelich quickly joined the NHL, playing five seasons with the New York Rangers and scoring 99 goals in the first three seasons. He joined the North Stars of Minnesota in 1986-1987, but only for 12 games.
After a brief stint in Italy, he was out of the game before a two-game playoff with the San Jose Sharks in 1991-92. His time in the NHL was 355 games, totaling 137 goals and 192 assists.
In 2012, his wife Kara, aged 44, accidentally died from a balcony on the second floor. Two years later, Pavelich sold his gold medal for $ 262,900 to a Dallas-based auction house, explaining that he was not in financial trouble and just wanted to insure the financial security of his adult daughter.
