California police plan to shoot en masse, police say

Rodolfo Montoya, 37, reportedly intended to shoot employees and customers at the Marriott hotel where he worked as a chef, Chief Robert Luna told a news conference on Wednesday.

Police arrested Montoya at his home in Huntington Beach after receiving information from an employee about Montoya's plans, Luna said.

"The suspect Montoya had clear plans, intent and means to carry out an act of violence that could have resulted in an incident causing many casualties," said Luna.

Police seized several high-powered weapons, tactical equipment and large-capacity magazines during a search of Montoya's home.

At least 27 people have been arrested for threatening mass attacks since the El Paso and Dayton shootings

Montoya does not appear to have a criminal history that would prevent her from legally owning the licensed types of arms in California, said Luna.

The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office expects the Long Beach Police to present its case on Thursday, CN spokesman Ricardo Santiago told CNN.

Montoya will appear in court Thursday, said Santiago.

At present, it is not known if Montoya has a lawyer.

This arrest is the latest in a series of detentions or investigations into large-scale shootings threats. At least 28 people have been arrested since the shooting in El Paso (Texas) and Dayton (Ohio) earlier this month. Just after the shooting, the FBI director issued a directive to the country's agency offices to conduct a new threat assessment.
