The New York Jets were already shabby linebacker in the wake of Avery Williamson's ACL. New York has just suffered another blow to the position as Brandon Copeland was suspended four games for performance enhancing substances.
Copeland will return to the Jets for their fifth week match against the Philadelphia Eagles. He started 10 games for the Jets last season, finishing with 35 tackles and five sacks while playing all 16 games. He was in sight for Williamson after the linebacker tore his ACL playing with the second team in the final pre-season game of the Jets, which head coach Adam Gase admitted was a mistake.
"Looking back, the decline is 20/20, I would have liked to be able to get it out of there a series earlier," Gase told reporters Sunday. "I spoke to him, it's about me, it's me who have to make this call and get him out of there.We did not do it.It's a shame because he had a good camp. "
The Jets are in their two best outside linebackers with the Copeland suspension. Harvey Langi is next on the list of depths, but he has not played in a regular season game since 2017 with the New England Patriots. Langi has spent the majority of 2018 in the Jets' training team.
Rookies Jachai Polite and Jamey Mosley are also candidates for more playing time. Polite, a third-round pick, had 11 Florida sacks and 19.5 tackles for the loss.
"He has size, he has a good attitude," said Jets coach Joe Vitt. "The pads will define it when we put them on."
