Kliff Kingsbury had just said that there were "good players" with respect to the wide receiver, while the Cardinals are trying to determine their depth chart in a place that seems to play a crucial role.
The Cards caught one of these players on the market Wednesday night, eventually signing a one – year contract with veteran grandfather Michael Crabtree.
Crabtree, 31, had worked for the Cardinals at State Farm Stadium two weeks ago, but the two sides failed to reach an agreement. As the regular season approached, discussions intensified. General Manager Steve Keim traded his veterans and released Kevin White earlier Wednesday before bringing in Crabtree.
Crabtree, which the Cardinals fans have come to know during his years with the San Francisco 49ers, spent last season in Baltimore. At the dawn of his 11th season in the NFL, Crabtree had 54 catches for 607 yards and three touchdowns for a Ravens team that seriously reduced his play after setting up rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson in the middle of last season .
He had 89 catches for 1,003 yards in 2016 while he was playing for the Raiders. In his career, Crabtree has 663 catches for 7,477 yards and 54 touchdowns.
The move immediately adds a quality experience to a depth chart that needed a bit of a stint on Larry Fitzgerald and Christian Kirk, a sophomore. The KeeSean Johnson and Andy Isabella draft picks will be part of the lineup, although the degree to which everyone can contribute as a rookie is unresolved. His compatriot Hakeem Butler was hand-injured against the Raiders last week. He is out of the regular season and could land on the injured reserve.
Second-year rider Trent Sherfield had a good side and should also be part of the team, while veterans like Pharoh Cooper and Damiere Byrd are fighting for a role. In a team that could keep seven receivers, Crabtree will get one of those places now.
