We forgive you if you have lost track of everything that happened in Wrigley Field on Wednesday night for the Giants.
A 12-11 loss to the Cubs was one of the wildest games of the year. The two starters were shaken, both ways were sealed and seven balls left the field. It was the first time since 2002 that these two teams faced each other and each scored double-digit points.
The coup de grace, a shot of two races from Kris Bryant to Reyes Moronta, decided to play and put the Giants in a difficult position. Here are three takeaways from the second night at Coors Field By The Lake:
A hard point
It's pretty amazing that the Giants played pretty well for one stretch to get into the Wild Card debate, but the climb is once again really steep.
Even before this match, FanGraphs offered the Giants only 1.4% of chances to win a place for the wild cards, and they are further behind after losing the first two against one of the many teams that they pursue. The problem with so many teams lying around is that at least one or two of them will win the same night. It is difficult to gain ground and the Giants failed to do so on Wednesday.
The four teams leading the Wild Card NL race all won on Wednesday. The Cubs currently have the second place, and the Giants have 5 1/2 games less. They are 6 1/2 in the back of the national with only 35 to play. These guys did what they had to do against the Diamondbacks, taking on three of the four, but this series in Chicago was the big one of the trip, and until now, the Giants have dropped two games to a team that they have to catch.
A sneaky time-share
It's gone under the radar, but Buster Posey and Stephen Vogt have nearly split their play time this month. Vogt made its debut Wednesday night August 10 and has 48 throws during the month. Posey started 12 games this month and has 49 at-bat.
Vogt provided another power bat against the right-handers and contributed to the return of the sixth inning, ending a long defeat against Yu Darvish with a two-point shot on the right. He tied the match seventh with a RBI single in the middle. There is a reason why he plays so often.
Another find?
The Giants listed Jandel Gustave on a list of 40 people in July, but did not call him right away. They saw something in the right-hander and wanted to keep it in the organization, and recently we understood why they were excited.
Gustave is one step away from launching an immaculate sleeve and calmed things down with a perfect seventh. He removed two, bringing his ERA back to 1.32 in 10 appearances.

The 26-year-old relies mainly on a fastball that sits 97-98 most evenings and led to three catches on Wednesday on his 14 shots. He only allowed eight hits in 13 2/3 innings since a promotion and got a bigger role. With a little more like this, he could be a real guy for the last rounds of Bochy and, given the current appearance of the bullpen, the Giants should perhaps take a breather. long eye and see what Gustave can offer for 2020.
